About the Award
The Nichols House Museum has created the Rose Standish Nichols Award to recognize individuals of outstanding achievement who embody the spirit of Rose Nichols (1872-1960) and her family.
As a “New Woman” of the late nineteenth century, Rose was an energetic trailblazer and a true Renaissance woman. In 1903, she was the first woman to be listed as a landscape architect in the Boston City Directory and worked professionally as a garden designer across the United States. Her creative work included decorative wood carving and embroidery, with which she adorned her home at 55 Mount Vernon Street in Beacon Hill, along with the fine art and antiques she collected both domestically and abroad. She was a prolific author on the subjects of garden history, design, interiors, antiques, and architecture.
A cause close to Rose’s heart was that of world peace, and through her involvement with the U. S. Women’s Peace Party, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and the League of Free Nations, she remained a champion for peace and understanding between nations throughout her lifetime.
B. June Hutchinson, 2020 Recipient

She is the author of At Home on Beacon Hill: Rose Standish Nichols and her Family published by the Museum in 2011.
