Boston was a major center of the American Arts and Crafts movement, home to the nation’s first Arts and Crafts society, founded in 1897. A reaction to an increasingly industrialized world, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated artisans and the handmade. Bostonians excited by these ideas learned traditional skills like metalworking, bookbinding, and woodworking. Beacon Hill, with its charmingly old fashioned homes, drew these makers as a place to live and create.
Enjoy a stroll past artists’ homes and studios as we explore bohemian Beacon Hill at the turn of the 20th century. We’ll discuss utopian art communities, artist cooperatives, Craftsman architecture on the Hill, and more.
